Maternity

Pregnancy changes everything about how your body feels — and most of those changes come with discomfort that nobody warned you about. Lower back pain, hip tension, swollen ankles, shoulder tightness from postural shifts, and a nervous system that never quite settles. Maternity massage addresses all of it.

About Maternity

Maternity massage — also called prenatal massage — is therapeutic massage specifically adapted for the physiological and emotional changes of pregnancy. It uses modified techniques and specialized positioning to address the unique needs of expecting mothers safely and effectively throughout all three trimesters.

One of the things that sets Blackbird apart is that we offer two positioning options so you can choose what feels best for your body:

Side-lying positioning uses supportive bolsters and pillows to keep you comfortable on your side, taking pressure off your belly and ensuring proper circulation throughout your session. This is the most commonly used position in prenatal massage and works beautifully for all trimesters.

Our pregnancy pillow with belly cutouts allows you to lie face down — something most expecting mothers haven't been able to do comfortably in months. The specially designed cutouts accommodate your belly and chest so you can experience the full relaxation of a face-down massage without any pressure on your bump. For many of our prenatal clients, this alone is worth the visit.

Your therapist will walk you through both options at the start of your session so you can choose — or switch between them — based on what your body needs that day.

More details

The focus remains on the areas most affected by pregnancy: the lower back and sacrum, hips and glutes, upper back and shoulders, legs and feet. Gentle Swedish techniques promote circulation and reduce swelling, while targeted work addresses the specific tension patterns that develop as your center of gravity shifts.

Benefits during pregnancy:

  • Significant reduction in lower back and hip pain
  • Reduced swelling in legs and feet
  • Improved sleep quality
  • Reduced anxiety and cortisol levels
  • Relief from sciatic nerve pain
  • Improved circulation and lymphatic flow

What to expect during your session:
Please let your therapist know your current trimester, any pregnancy complications or high-risk factors, and your OB's recommendations before your session. We always recommend checking with your healthcare provider before beginning any new bodywork during pregnancy.

Who it's best for:
Maternity massage is appropriate for most expecting mothers from the second trimester onward. First trimester massage may be offered on a case-by-case basis. It's especially beneficial for active women, those carrying multiples, and anyone experiencing significant musculoskeletal discomfort during pregnancy.
